Declaring a Major in Visual Art
Declaring a Major in VISA – whether a BA or a BFA – is a two-stage process.
- We confirm that you have met all the 100- and 200-level ARTH/VISA requirements. This usually happens once the grades are submitted at the end of second term in your second year. If some requirements are still outstanding, we’ll then discuss how to cover remaining requirements in the coming year and how your registration can proceed.
If all requirements are met, then we’re on to stage two.
- To attain the requisite third-year standing at UBC and thereby be eligible for the major, you need to have completed at least 54 credits (which may include transfer credits). If you’re declaring at the end of your second year, this usually entails waiting for UBC to run their annual check and to roll all eligible students with at least 54 credits to third-year standing (this happens when you’re given eligibility for the winter session – usually in the middle of May).
Once you’ve met the requirements and have at least third-year standing, email the AHVA undergraduate advisor Deana Holmes with your student number and confirm which VISA major you’re hoping to declare.
Declaring a Minor in Visual Art
The minor is only available within the Bachelor of Arts (with the exception of students who are pursuing a different BFA major, such as film production or creative writing).
Prospective minors need to contact the AHVA undergraduate advisor Deana Holmes to confirm they’ve met the 100- and 200-level requirements for the minor. The advisor will then declare the minor.
Note: Because upper-level VISA studio courses are restricted to our honours and majors, VISA minors are not able to register themselves in upper-level VISA courses. Instead, minors must submit a registration request to Deana Holmes. This request must include your student number and the full details for the course you’re requesting (for example, VISA 351 001). Once our majors and honours students have had an opportunity to register, minors students will be added to courses (space permitting) in the order the requests are received.
Upper-Level Visual Art Course Restrictions
Students who have completed the relevant prerequisites – but who are not a VISA honours, major, or minor – are still able to request registration in upper-level VISA courses.
Online registration in upper-level VISA courses is restricted to our declared majors and honours students. All minors and students with prerequisites must submit a registration request by email to Deana Holmes which includes your student number and the full details for the course you’re requesting (for example, VISA 351 001).
Once our majors students and honours students have had an opportunity to register, requests will be registered (space permitting) in the order the requests are received.
