Change the world through the power of the arts.

Your vision of a more inclusive, compassionate and equitable world is possible. In the face of humanity’s most critical and complex issues, UBC Arts students, researchers, faculty and alumni are asking the hard questions. They’re diving deep for insight, thinking critically, fuelling curiosity and sharing ideas that advance just and thriving societies.

What happens here can change everything. Your support is the catalyst. Join the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory in shaping a better future.

Featured initiatives

Distinguished Visiting Artist Program

Each year, the department invites distinguished international and Canadian critics, curators, artists, and scholars to deliver a public lecture, lead an intensive seminar, participate in graduate student critiques, conduct studio visits, and assist students in developing their work and early professional career. Recent visitors to the department include Cao Minghao, José Vicente Martín Martínez, Heather Igloliorte and Taqralik Partridge, and Hajra Waheed. Please visit here for the full list.

Art History Graduate Student Travel

The travel fund provides art history graduate students support to conduct essential research in the field to meet with living artists, visit archives, galleries, and museums, and study research-related languages towards their theses and dissertations. Funds are also used for travel to deliver research presentations at conferences or symposia. In the last few years, Art History Graduate Students have traveled to Berlin, New York, Rome, Seoul, Isfahan, London, and Athens to carry out and present their research.
