Congratulations to Dugan Uribe, Recipient of the 2026 University of BC Medal in Fine Arts!
The award is made to the student standing at the head of the graduating class in the BFA degree. Dugan completed not one, but two majors in the BFA—Visual Art and Creative Writing, disciplines that support his practice in comics, which blend writing with visual art.

Dugan Uribe focuses on the vast potential of comics as a form of simultaneous art and writing. His hand-drawn art style is inspired by the comics he drew during his elementary-school years and their unmistakable energy and earnestness that he wishes to recontextualize in his works. He aims to explore the concepts of play, productivity, optimism, and humour, while continuing to work towards his childhood dream of becoming a cartoonist.
