Germaine Koh Receives 2025 Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) Funding

Congratulations to faculty member Germaine Koh on her successful application to the 2025 Campus as a Living Lab (CLL) fund for her project Fabric of Campus Fibre Garden, which received $30,000 in funding.

Located at the heart of campus, this meadow-like research garden will include student-built public furniture and a field station for cultural activity. The garden will demonstrate how agricultural systems can integrate into our daily lives and urban green spaces. By producing fibres from primarily native plants, this focus on regenerative, pre-colonial fibre traditions will further research on sustainability in textiles, and contribute to the university’s work towards climate resilience, decolonization, and community experiential learning.

Faculty lead: Germaine Koh, Assistant Professor, Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory, Faculty of Arts

Staff lead: Simone Levy, Urban Design Planner, Campus + Community Planning

Co-lead: Renée Lussier, Landscape Architect, Campus + Community Planning

Initiated in 2020, the CLL Fund Competitions have enabled faculty and staff to co-create and co-deliver more than 20 unique projects across both UBC campuses. This year’s competition drew submissions from more than 28 academic departments and operational units across UBC Vancouver, resulting in eight exceptional projects funded through a total of $500,000.
