About

PhD, MA (Rochester)

BA (Reed)

Godfre Leung is associate professor of art history at St. Cloud State University, where he teaches courses in modern and contemporary art, critical theory, and curatorial studies.

He specializes in transnational postwar art, global contemporary art, and sound studies. His book manuscript, Playback: Perceptual Attention in the Age of Digital Audio, analyzes three works of sound-based art from 1985, each of whose medium is a commercial audio playback format. The project pursues an alternative account of the digital shift through the perceptual matrix of the compact disc.

Recent publications include essays in Art Journal, Panorama: Journal of the Association of Historians of American Art, The Soundtrack, and Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art. His writing has also been commissioned for publications by the Museum of Modern Art (NY) and Walker Art Center, as well as the upcoming exhibition catalogue Jeremy Shaw: Variation FQ. His criticism has recently appeared in Afterimage, Art in America, C Magazine, and The Third Rail.

From 2008 to 2010 he was editor of the journal InVisible Culture, where he co-edited a special issue on contemporary East Asian art and culture. He served as a curatorial consultant for the 2015 Walker Art Center exhibition International Pop, which traveled to the Dallas Museum of Art and Philadelphia Museum of Art. Most recently, he curated Barbara Held and Benton C Bainbridge: Pausa at Kiehle Gallery in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

With Alexandra Alisauskas, he is co-founder of untitled criticism workshop, a free community workshop for art criticism hosted by Public Functionary in Minneapolis. He is the recipient of a 2018 Minnesota Emerging Writers’ Grant from the Jerome Foundation and Loft Literary Center.
