About

Carolyn A. Stockbridge (b, UK 1965) is an artist and educator working in Painting and related media. Stockbridge is interested in abstraction and experimentation with process and materials to open up new areas of enquiry, while all along responding to socio-political, spiritual and environmental conditions. Also known for composing music for independent film, Stockbridge records and produces their own experimental music.

Stockbridge’s work has been exhibited internationally in artist run centres, galleries, museums and on screen since 1994: CICA Museum Korea, MAMRio Brazil, Access Gallery Vancouver, Belkin Gallery Vancouver, Elliott Louis Gallery Vancouver, DCA Gallery LA, Atlantic Gallery NY, Charles H. Scott Gallery Vancouver, Dynamo Gallery Vancouver, Selkin Secant Gallery LA, NYU East Galleries NY, Berlin Film Festival Germany, Channel 4 UK, Video Inn Vancouver, Douglas Udell Gallery Vancouver, Grunt Gallery Vancouver, The Art Students League NY, Prince Street Gallery NY, Atlantic Gallery, NY.

After studying Painting at the Art Students League of New York, Stockbridge furthered their education in visual art, art history, and social theory with special focus on Monochrome Painting at the Otis College of Art & Design in Los Angeles, the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design (BFA) and the University of British Columbia (MFA). Originally from Canterbury, Kent in the UK, they are grateful to be living and working as an uninvited guest in the ancestral, unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
