Dan Starling Among 65 UBC Arts Researchers Awarded 2024 SSHRC Funding

Congratulations to faculty member Dan Starling on receiving SSHRC’s Insight Development Grant for his project, The Pencil of Nature: Redux, through the 2024 Insight Development Grants Competition!

Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas.

The Pencil of Nature: Redux is an innovative research-creation project that combines unique archival, field research, and artistic processes to make a series of relief prints as one answer to the question of how settler artists can responsibly use depiction to promote awareness of the settler ideology that separates humans from nature and thereby contributes to climate inaction by the general public. Combining traditional and digital technologies, the project also seeks to develop new processes in printmaking, to support graduate and undergraduate student learning and development, and to promote artistic research-creation as a form of research.
