AHVA Alumnus Abbas Akhavan to Represent Canada at 2026 Venice Biennale

The Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory (AHVA) extends our heartfelt congratulations to Abbas Akhavan (MFA ’06) who will represent Canada at the 61st International Art Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia 2026!

Born in Tehran and based between Montreal and Berlin, Abbas Akhavan is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice reflects on the relationships between place and history and attends to the geopolitical forces that define spaces.

The International Art Exhibition—La Biennale di Venezia is the largest and most prestigious contemporary art exhibition in the world with more than eighty countries participating. 

For more than sixty years, the Canada Pavilion, situated in the Giardini, has featured the work of the most accomplished Canadian artists, curated by the country’s most renowned curators.
