The Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory at the University of British Columbia is pleased to present a selection of art works from the first year studio classes. Encompassing the diverse interests and skills of first year students, this exhibition celebrates the creative and conceptual thinking that comes alive in these classes.

The foundation year courses in visual arts at UBC are open to any students attending the university. These offer a fertile ground for cross-curricular dialogue between visual arts, the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. Specifically, visual arts has proven to be an effective way to explore the creative and aesthetic interests of UBC students, no matter what discipline they may be in. The introductory studio classes challenge student to think critically about the way in which the world around them influences and develops representation, while also offering an introduction to new media, techniques, and technologies for creative image making. Course content ranges from the study and practice of specific mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video and digital media to more interdisciplinary studies. Overall the first year studio courses offer students a solid basis of historical, technical, visual and conceptual skills integral to further development in the arts and very useful to other areas of academic study.
