Diploma in Art History

The Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory offers the Diploma in Art History (DAHY). Applicants to the program will already have a first degree in another discipline. Applications for admission should be made to Enrolment Services no later than, and preferably well in advance of, August 1 for entry in September.

Upon admission to the Diploma in Art History, students must consult with the Undergraduate Advisor prior to registration.
The diploma program requires 30 credits of courses in ARTH numbered 300 or higher. No more than 6 credits of cross-listed courses offered by other departments may be counted toward the requirements. Only 6 credits of C standing may be counted toward the diploma requirements.

Of the 30 credits required, a diploma student must complete the following:

  • 3 credits of ARTH 300 Seminar on Methods and Approaches in Art History
  • 15 credits of art history courses numbered 300 or higher in a geographical, chronological, or thematic area of focus*
  • 9 credits in art history courses numbered 300 or higher in areas that are chronologically and/or geographically distinct from the 15 credit focus*
  • 3 credits in a 400-level art history seminar

* All of these courses must be determined in consultation with the Art History Undergraduate Advisor, Gregory Gibson: greg.gibson@ubc.ca.

Application Procedure for the Diploma in Art History

For Students who have an undergraduate degree in another field from UBC

Students should have a CWL Account and apply through the Student Services Centre.

  • Login with CWL Account number
  • Choose campus (Vancouver)
  • Apply for re-admission
  • Choose Diploma in Art History

(Because the only real requirement for entry is that the student have a degree in another field, acceptance into the program should be simple. However entry is only once a year, in September.)

For Students who have a degree from a university other than UBC

Apply online.

  • Create an account
  • Choose “apply now”
  • Choose “Diploma in Art History”

(For a successful application you will have to send a transcript proof of the completion of your first degree. Application must be made by August 1 for entry in September. Note that entry into the Diploma Program is only once a year, in September.)
