William Wood
An art historian and critic, William Wood joined the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory as an Assistant Professor in 2001. With two previous degrees from UBC, Wood also holds a doctorate in Art History from the University of Sussex, graduating with a thesis on English conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s. His current research focuses on contemporary art and its display, the history of conceptual and minimal art of the 1960s and 1970, aesthetics and cultural criticism.
Since 1984, Wood has published on recent art in journals, anthologies and exhibition catalogues as well as holding editorial positions with a number of art publications including C Magazine, Public, Vanguard and Parachute. Recent catalogue essays and articles have dealt with such artists as Stan Douglas, Brian Jungen, Mike Kelley, Evan Lee, Ron Terada, and the entity known as the Vancouver School.
For the academic year, 2006 to 2007, Wood and Professor Manuel Pina are organizing the Joan Carlisle Irving Lecture Series for the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory. The theme is Terror!: The Series. Professor Wood is also, along with Professor Serge Guilbaut and Kim Phillips, organizing a 2007 Green College Colloquium on Globalization and Solitudes, relating to Pan-American cultural politics and postwar visual art.
